Hosted by the Oregon Zoo, Pride of Portland is a celebratory event that was established to honor the Zoo’s new lion cubs: Kamali, Zalika and Angalia.
I chose to create a head on depiction of a lion to capture its strength and beauty. I then went forward to design the lion with vibrantly colored textures using the zoo’s light show installations as means for visual inspiration. I used the design as a template to create collateral such as signage, tickets, and posters.
To me, there are few animals as iconic as the African lion. The nickname “King of the Jungle” helped to fuel my inspiration for the design of Pride of Portland. The lion is synonymous with pride, bravery, and strength, and has been ingrained in our culture for countless decades. I wanted to pay homage to this majestic creature by designing a piece that represented these traits.
